I've heard this phrase before in reference to pregnant women. I always thought it was silly. Why would they need to re-organize things, deep clean, and rearrange their whole house just because a baby is coming? I honestly didn't have any good answers until now.
I liked how our house was. We had things pretty well organized and we had the space we needed for just the two of us. As soon as we found out that Baby E was on her way, though, I began the process of making plans for her nursery. The problem, though, was that we were using our second bedroom as an office/junk room. You know, the place that everything without a place goes. There was a box of computer chords and accessories, a pile of old college textbooks, and who knows how many binders. We had things organized and it didn't seem like we had any "junk" until we started cleaning out the room. I started going through everything we had and quickly realized that this is what I kept hearing about. As I tossed things into different piles according to what we'd keep, what we'd donate, and what was trash, I imagined a little bird.
A momma bird, to be exact. I imagined her flying out of her nest and returning with twigs and grass. I imagined her using her little beak to place this there and that over here, all in preparation for her little ones. I also imagined her changing her mind and using her beak to pick up the twigs and grass she just brought home and promptly tossing them out. They'd fall toward the ground while momma bird flew away to find better twigs and grass that suited her better.
That momma bird is me.
I was tossing things out and making way for our baby. I wanted things to be perfect for her! I wanted to have a place for everything and everything in it's place. I wanted organization and I wanted perfection. If I wanted all of this, I needed to get started as soon as possible. Yes, I was only about 10 weeks along when I started nesting, but I am so glad I didn't wait any longer.
The first big step was to return the treadmill that we were borrowing from my brother. He came down with his truck and got it, so that was one less thing to worry about. Next, we needed to get rid of an old couch we had downstairs and bring the couch from the office into the family room.
Finally, we needed to find a new place for the green bookshelf. I considered painting the bookshelf and leaving it in her nursery but Kyle and I decided it would be best to just find a different place in our home for it. We still needed a place for our books so the bookshelf got put in our bedroom.
We planned on buying a new crib for Baby E, but we were open to finding good deals on other used furniture. My sister found a great deal on an indoor yard sale for a changing table. They wanted $10 for the table as well as a new changing pad. I let her know we wanted it and she picked it up for me. I kept an eye out for a nice dresser and found a few good options but nothing ever came together. One night, Kyle and I were walking in to Walmart for some groceries we needed when I got a notification from Facebook. Someone had posted in one of the groups I was in so I decided to see what they were selling. It happened to be a beautiful white dresser that would be perfect for Baby E's room so I commented right away. I let him know our offer and that we could get it right away and pay cash. He accepted it so Kyle and I went home to drop off the groceries and leave the Honda at home so we could take the Jeep to transport the dresser. It was the price we had budgeted for and I didn't have to re-paint it! We were pretty excited.
I had been picking up little ascents for her room along the way. A few gold jars, fabric for the windows, and some silk flowers from Joann's, some canvas prints form Ross, and a sheepskin rug from Walmart. I had a vision in my head and her room was going to be beautiful!
The changing table was a plain wood finish but I wanted her furniture to be white. With the help of my brother, Kyle and I got the supplies from Home Depot and I spent a day painting.
It turned out just as I had hoped. About a week after it was finished, Kyle's mom purchased the crib for us and we set it up as soon as it arrived.
The crib and changing table went together perfectly! I was so excited everything was coming together.
A few weeks passed and Kyle and I were driving home from visiting my sister. I got a notification from the Facebook indoor yardsale so I checked out the post. It was for a small glider rocking chair and ottoman for only $25! I commented right away and let the lady know that we could stop on our way home and pay cash. She agreed and we went home with a beautiful chair that just needed the slipcover to be washed and a new foam pad for the cushion.
We had all the furniture we needed, now it was time to get the curtain rod up, hang the curtains, put the gold vinyl on the walls, and put up two small shelves that would house some decor.
Our little spare bedroom sure came a long way from the treadmill, couch, and bookshelf in the corner. We got everything for her nursery finished by the time I was 20 weeks along. Which has left me with plenty of time to figure out ways to implement my nesting craze in other areas of the house.
Downstairs, I put up the third shelf for our make-shift pantry.
And Kyle and I made a small area in our family room into our office. We moved the love seat to the opposite side of the room and put the desk and mini fridge into the corner.
Then, this past weekend we added a larger filing cabinet, a white board/cork board, and again, rearranged the corner office.
That little black shelf is one of two that we own. They used to house our ever-growing movie collection, but we also got a new bookshelf this past weekend. So the small shelf is now my craft supplies shelf and our movie collection has a whole new look.

In addition to all of this nesting, we've completely changed our bedroom layout a few times. This nesting phase is an on-going thing and I'm sure I will find more to change or make better before Baby E is here. I really do feel like that momma bird, a little frazzled and definitely taking on a lot. She just wants her nest to be ready for her new addition and I want our home to be ready as well! For now, I'm very happy with the improvements we have made as we eagerly await her arrival.
